Question

The number that could NOT be a common denominator for these two fractions is?
2 over 4 and 3 over 8.

  1. 32
  2. 12
  3. 8
  4. 24

hintHint:

Any Number which is not an integral Multiple of Least Common Denominator will not be the common denominator. We have to find the least common denominator and for that we have to find the least common multiple of denominators. Least Common Denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of denominator of a set of fractions. The method of calculating the LCD is same as calculation of Least Common Multiple of fractions denominators. The least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the lowest possible number that can be divisible by both numbers.

The correct answer is: 12

The least common denominator is the lowest common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions.
    Step1: We are given fractions 2 over 4 and 3 over 8.
And we have to find the LCM of denominators of the fractions i.e., 4 and 8
Step2: We know that Multiples of 4 are:4 comma 8 comma 12 comma 16 comma 20 comma 24 space horizontal ellipsis
And the multiples of 8 are:8 comma 16 comma 24 comma 32 comma 40 comma 48 space horizontal ellipsis
Step3: Now we have to find the LCM of  4 and 8
From the above multiples of  4 and 8 it can be easily seen that the least common multiple of  is 8
Hence the least common denominator of  2 over 4 and 3 over 8 is 8.
Now we have to check which number is not divisible by 8. The number that is not divisible by 8 will be the answer of this question.
From the options it can be easily seen that 12 is not divisible by 8. So, 12 cannot be the common denominator
