Question
Solve the following using the substitution method and find the value of x and y:
4x + y = -9
5x – 3y = 10
- -1, -5
- -1, 5
- 1, -5
- 2, 5
Hint:
Simplify the given equation by expanding the parenthesis.
Solve one of the equations for either x or y.
Substitute the step 2 solution in the other equation.
The correct answer is: -1, -5
using the substitution method;
Given equations;
4x + y = -9......(1)
5x – 3y = 10.......(2)
Simplify equation 1;
4x+y=-9
y=-9-4x........(3)
substitute equation 3 in the equation 2
5x-3y=10=>5x-3(-9-4x)=10
5x+27+12x=10
17x+27=10
17x=10-27
17x=-17
x=-1
than y=-9-4(-1)
y=-5
Therefore ,the value of x=-1 and y=-5
