Question

The ratio of the measures of two supplementary angles is 5:4. Find the measures of the angles.

  1. 100° and 80°
  2. 90°   and 90°
  3. 70° and 110°
  4. 140° and 40°

hintHint:

Supplementary angles are those angles that sum up to 180 degrees. For example, angle 130° and angle 50° are supplementary angles because sum of 130° and 50° is equal to 180°. Similarly, complementary angles add up to 90 degrees.

The correct answer is: 100° and 80°

    Supplementary angles are those angles that sum up to 180 degrees.
    Given : The ratio of the measures of two supplementary angles is 5:4.
    Let the angles be 5x and 4x
    By property :
    5x + 4x = 180degree
    9x =  180degree
    x =  20degree
    Angles = 5x = 5 cross times20degree =  100degree and 4x =  4 cross times20degree = 80degree
    Thus, the measures of the angles are 100degree and  80degree.
