Question

Which of the following complex numbers is equal to is
( 5 + 12i ) – ( 9i2 – 6i ), for i = square root of negative 1 end root ?

  1. 5 - 12i
  2. 5 + 18i
  3. 14 - 18i
  4. 14 + 18i

The correct answer is: 14 + 18i

HINT – Open the brackets and solve
    SOLUTION – Given complex number is  ( 5 + 12i ) – ( 9i2 – 6i )
    Opening the brackets
    We get ,  5 + 12i – 9i2 + 6i
    rightwards double arrow5 + 18i – 9i2
    We know that  i2 = - 1.          ---- (1)
    Using (1), we get,  5 + 18i – 9 cross times ( - 1)
    rightwards double arrow5 + 18i + 9
    rightwards double arrow14 + 18i
    So, option D is correct
