A sports store had 60 backpacks in store, some with wheels and some without wheels, before a new shipment of backpacks arrived The number of wheeled backpacks in the new shipment was twice the number of wheeled backpacks already in stock, and the number of backpacks without wheels in the new shipment was 5 times the number of backpacks without wheels already in stock. After the new shipment arrived, there were 330 backpacks in the store. Before the shipment there were x wheeled backpacks and y backpacks without wheels. Which of the following equations can be used with x + y = 60 to solve for x & y?

  1. 2x + 5y = 330  
  2. 2x + 5y = 270  
  3. 5x + 2y = 270  
  4. 5x + 2y = 330  

The correct answer is: 2x + 5y = 270


    No. of backpacks in new shipment = Total backpacks after new shipment - No. of backpacks already in stock
    = 330 - 60
    = 270 _______________. (equation i)
    Step-by-step solution:-
    No. of Wheeled backpacks already in store = x
    No. of backpacks without wheels already in store = y
    No. of Wheeled backpacks in new shipment = 2 × No. of wheeled backpacks already in stock
    = 2 × x
    No. of backpacks without wheels in new shipment = 5 × No. of backpacks without wheels already in stock
    = 5 × y
    ∴ As per the second condition-
    No. of backpacks in new shipment = 2x + 5y
    ∴ 270 = 2x + 5y ___________________________ (From equation i)
    ∴ 2x + 5y = 270 is the second equation which can be used with x + y = 60 to solve for x & y.
    Final Answer:-
    Option B i.e. 2x + 5y = 270 is the correct Option.
