Question

C = 10x + 4y
The formula above gives the monthly cost C, in dollars, of operating a delivery truck when the driver works a total of x hours and when y gallons of gasoline are used. If, in a particular month, it cost no more than $ 2,000 to operate the truck and at least 150 gallons of gas were used, what is the maximum number of hours the driver could have worked?

  1. 125
  2. 140
  3. 500
  4. 1,400

The correct answer is: 140

    Given equation is C = 10x + 4y…(i)
    Where C is the monthly cost in dollars, x is the total time in hours and y is the gallons of gasoline used.
    In a particular month,
    C = $ 2000 (given)
    y = 150 (given)
    Substitute the values in equation (i).
    Thus we get, 2000 = 10x + 4 × 150 = 10x + 600
    On subtracting 600 from both the sides, we get 1400 = 10x
    This can be written as 10x = 1400
    Divide both the sides by 10.
    We get, x = 140
    So the driver could have worked for a maximum of 140 hours.
    Hence option B is the answer.
