Question

Let a with minus on top equals i with minus on top plus j with minus on top plus k with minus on top comma b with minus on top equals negative i plus j with minus on top plus k with minus on top comma c with minus on top equals i minus j with minus on top plus k with minus on top and d with minus on top equals i plus j with minus on top minus k with minus on top. Then, the line of intersection of planes one determined by stack a with ‾ on top comma stack b with ‾ on top and other determined by stack c with ‾ on top comma stack d with ‾ on top is perpendicular to

  1. x-axis
  2. y-axis
  3. both x-axis &y -axis
  4. both y-axis & z - axis

hintHint:

We are given that there are two planes. We are given two vectors in that plane. We have to tell the line of intersection of the points determined by the vectors is perpendicular to which axis. To find the line of intersection of planes we need normal. The normal is perpendicular to that line itself. To find the normal to the plane, we take cross product of two vectors in that plane.

The correct answer is: both y-axis & z - axis

The given vectors in first and second plane are a with rightwards arrow on top comma space b with rightwards arrow on top and c with rightwards arrow on top comma space d with rightwards arrow on top
The vectors are given as follows:
table attributes columnalign left end attributes row cell a with rightwards arrow on top equals i with hat on top plus j with hat on top plus k with hat on top end cell row cell b with rightwards arrow on top equals negative i with hat on top plus j with hat on top plus k with hat on top end cell end table
table attributes columnalign left end attributes row cell c with rightwards arrow on top equals i with hat on top minus j with hat on top plus k with hat on top end cell row cell d with rightwards arrow on top equals i with hat on top plus j with hat on top minus k with hat on top end cell end table
We will find the normal to the planes using the vectors.
The normal to the first plane will be using first two vectors and the normal to the second plane will be using next two vectors.
n subscript 1 space equals a with rightwards arrow on top space cross times space b with rightwards arrow on top
space space space space space equals open vertical bar table row cell i with hat on top end cell cell j with hat on top end cell cell k with hat on top end cell row 1 1 1 row cell negative 1 end cell 1 1 end table close vertical bar
space space space space equals i with hat on top left parenthesis 1 space minus space 1 right parenthesis space minus j with hat on top left square bracket 1 space minus space left parenthesis negative 1 right parenthesis right square bracket space plus space k with hat on top left square bracket 1 space minus left parenthesis negative 1 right parenthesis right square bracket
space space space space equals 0 space minus 2 j with hat on top plus space 2 k with hat on top
space space space space equals negative 2 j with hat on top plus 2 k with hat on top
space space
n subscript 2 equals c with rightwards arrow on top cross times d with rightwards arrow on top
space space space space equals open vertical bar table row cell i with hat on top end cell cell j with hat on top end cell cell k with hat on top end cell row 1 cell negative 1 end cell 1 row 1 1 cell negative 1 end cell end table close vertical bar
space space space space equals i with hat on top left parenthesis 1 space minus space 1 right parenthesis minus j with hat on top left parenthesis negative 1 minus 1 right parenthesis plus k with hat on top left square bracket 1 space minus left parenthesis negative 1 right parenthesis right square bracket
space space space space equals space 0 space plus space 2 j with hat on top space plus space 2 k with hat on top
space space space space equals 2 j with hat on top plus 2 k with hat on top
If we see in both the normals there is no x component.
We will use the normals to find the line of intersection of the planes.
n subscript 1 space end subscript cross times space n subscript 2 space equals open vertical bar table row cell i with hat on top end cell cell j with hat on top end cell cell k with hat on top end cell row 0 cell negative 2 end cell 2 row 0 2 2 end table close vertical bar
space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space equals i with hat on top left parenthesis negative 2 minus 2 right parenthesis space minus j with hat on top left parenthesis 0 right parenthesis space plus space k with hat on top left parenthesis 0 right parenthesis
space space space space space space space space space space space space space space space equals negative 4 i with hat on top
If we see the vector has only x component. It means the line is parallel to x-axis. And a line parallel to x-axis will be perpendicular to both y and z axis.
So, right answer is both y and z axis.

For such questions, we should know how to find the line intersecting two planes. We should also know how to find the normal to the plane using two vectors.
