Question
The scatterplot above shows data for ten charities along with the line of best fit. For the charity with the greatest percent of total expenses spent on programs, which of the following is closest to the difference of the actual percent and the percent predicted by the line of best fit?
- 10%
- 7%
- 4%
- 1%
The correct answer is: 7%
HINT – Take the approx. values from the graph. See which option is most appropriate
SOLUTION – We can observe from the graph that the charity with the greatest percent of total expenses spent on programs lies between x = 3000 and x = 4000
Let total income be x0 = 3500 ( approx. value)
And the percent lies between y = 90 and y = 95
Let percent of total expenses spent on programs be y0 = 92%
According to line of best fit at x1 = 3500, y1 = 85% ( approx. value)
the difference of actual percent and the percent predicted by
the line of best fit = y0 – y1
= 92% - 85%
= 7%
Hence, option B is correct
Expenses are sums of money spent on goods or services. It is defined as the amount of money required to obtain something."It takes money to make money," as the adage goes. Supplier payments, employee wages, factory leases, and equipment depreciation are all everyday expenses.
For example, running a car can be costly in terms of fuel, repairs, and insurance.
Profit (P): When a product is sold for more than its cost, the seller makes a profit.
Loss (L): When a product is sold for less than its cost, the seller suffers a loss.

The equation above models the total cost y, in dollars, that a company charges a customer to rent a truck for one day and drive the truck x miles. The total cost consists of a flat fee plus a charge per mile driven. When the equation is graphed in the xy-plane, what does the y-intercept of the graph represent in terms of the model?
