Question

A piston of a syringe pushes a liquid with a speed of 1 cm/sec. The radii of the syringe tube and the needle are R = 1cm and r = 0.5 mm respectively. The velocity of the liquid coming out of the needle is:

  1. 2 cm/sec
  2. 400 cm/sec
  3. 10 cm/sec
  4. None of these.

The correct answer is: 400 cm/sec

    According to the equation of continuity,
    Av = av¢
    Þv¢ = (A/a)v
    where A = pR2 and a = pr2.

    Þv¢ = open parentheses fraction numerator R over denominator r end fraction close parentheses to the power of 2 end exponent v = open parentheses fraction numerator 1   c m over denominator 0.05   c m end fraction close parentheses to the power of 2 end exponent (1 cm/sec) = 400 cm/sec.
