Question

For all value of a and b the line ( a + 2b) x + (a - b) y + (a + 5b) = 0 passes through the point

  1. (-1, 2)
  2. (2, -1)
  3. (-2, 1)
  4. (1, -2)

hintHint:

We will write the equation in terms of a space a n d space b as follows a left parenthesis x plus y plus 1 right parenthesis space plus space b left parenthesis 2 x minus y plus 5 right parenthesis space equals 0  and then make the coefficients of a space a n d space b equal to zero. We will get equations of two lines and we have to find the intersection point of these two lines.

The correct answer is: (-2, 1)

In this question we are given line left parenthesis space a space plus space 2 b right parenthesis space x space plus space left parenthesis a space minus space b right parenthesis space y space plus space left parenthesis a space plus space 5 b right parenthesis space equals space 0  and we have to find the coordinates through which lines will pass irrespective of any values of a space a n d space b
For the lines to pass through a fixed point it must not depend on a space a n d space b on that point.
    Therefore,
Step1: Rewriting the given equation of line.
    a x plus 2 b x plus a y minus b y plus a plus 5 b equals 0
    Step2:  Taking the terms related to a space a n d space b common
=>a left parenthesis x plus y plus 1 right parenthesis space plus space b left parenthesis 2 x minus y plus 5 right parenthesis space equals 0
Step3:  For the line to pass through a fix point the coefficient of a space a n d space b must be zero
    Therefore.
    x plus y plus 1 equals 0 and 2 x minus y plus 5 equals 0
    Step4: Solving for the points
For finding the values of x and y we need to solve above two linear equation in two variable.
    x plus y plus 1 equals 0
2 x minus y plus 5 equals 0
By adding both the equation we get
    3 x equals negative 6
    =>x equals negative 2
Now we will substitute the value of x in any one of the above equation to find y.
    x plus y plus 1 equals 0
minus 2 plus y plus 1 equals 0
    So y equals 1.
Hence, for any value of a space a n d space b the line must pass through left parenthesis negative 2 comma 1 right parenthesis.
