Question

The 22 students in a health class conducted an experiment in which they each recorded their pulse rates, in beats per minute, before and after completing a light exercise routine. The dot plots below display the results.

Let s subscript 1  and T subscript 1 be the standard deviation and range, respectively, of the data before exercise, and let s subscript 2  and r subscript 2  be the standard deviation and range, respectively, of the data after exercise. Which of the following is true?

  1. s subscript 1 equals s subscript 2 text  and  end text r subscript 1 equals r subscript 2
  2. s subscript 1 less than s subscript 2 text  and  end text r subscript 1 less than r subscript 2
  3. s subscript 1 greater than s subscript 2 text  and  end text r subscript 1 greater than r subscript 2
  4. s subscript 1 not equal to s subscript 2 text  and  end text r subscript 1 equals r subscript 2

hintHint:

Range of a dataset = Max value of the dataset – Min value of the dataset.

The correct answer is: s subscript 1 equals s subscript 2 text  and  end text r subscript 1 equals r subscript 2

    Step 1 of 2:
In case of before exercise, max value = 88 and min value = 56. Hence, range is (88-56) = 32.
In case of after exercise, max value = 112 and min value = 80. Hence, range is (112-80) = 32.
So, for both the cases, the range is same, viz. r1 = r2.
    Step 2 of 2:
Now, if we carefully observe the spread of the data from the mean given in the dot plots seem to be equal because their ranges are equal. Hence, the standard deviations are same.
    So, we have s1 = s2.
    Final Answer:
    The correct choice is— A) s1 = s2 and r1 = r2.
