Question

The Sum of two numbers is 4 The larger number is 12 more than three times the smaller number. What are the numbers?

hintHint:

let the two numbers be x and y(where y > x)respectively.
Using the given conditions frame the system of equations and solve them to get the numbers.

The correct answer is: The two numbers which satisfy the given conditions are - 2 and 6

    Ans :- -2 and 6 are the required numbers.
    Explanation :-
    let the two numbers be x and y(where y > x)respectively.
    Step 1:- frame the system of linear equations from given conditions.
    The Sum of two numbers is 4
    I.e  x plus y equals 4                   —Eq1
    The larger number is 12 more than three times the smaller number
    I.e  y equals 3 x plus 12               —Eq2
    Step 2:- find x by substituting Eq2 in Eq1.
    x plus y equals 4 not stretchy rightwards double arrow x plus 3 x plus 12 equals 4
    4 x equals negative 12 plus 4 not stretchy rightwards double arrow 4 x equals negative 8
    ∴ x = -2
    Step 3:- find the value of y by substituting value of x
    x plus y equals 4 not stretchy rightwards double arrow negative 2 plus y equals 4
    y equals 4 plus 2
    ∴ y = 6
    ∴The two numbers which satisfy the given conditions are - 2 and 6.
