Question

In a basketball game, the bulldogs make a total of 21 shots. Some of the shots are 2 - point shots while others are 3 point shots. The bulldogs score a total of 50 points. How many 2 point and 3 point shots did they make?

hintHint:

let the no.of 2 points and 3-points shots be x and y respectively.

The correct answer is: The no.of 2 points and 3-points shots scored by bulldogs be 13 and 8 respectively.


    Using the given conditions frame the system of equations and solve them to get the no.of 2 points shots and 3 point shots .
    Ans :- no.of 2 point shots = x = 13 ; no.of 3 points shots = y = 8
    Explanation :-
    let the no.of 2 points and 3-points shots be x and y respectively.
    Step 1:- frame the system of linear equations from given conditions.
    total of 21 shots
    I.e  x plus y equals 21                  —Eq1
    The bulldogs score a total of 50 points
    The score from 2 points shots = no.of 2-point shots × 2 = 2x
    The score from 3 points shots = no.of 3-point shots × 3 = 3y
    I.e 2 x plus 3 y equals 50                 —Eq2
    Step 2:- find x by eliminating y.
    Do 3Eq1 -Eq2 to eliminate y
    3 left parenthesis x plus y right parenthesis minus left parenthesis 2 x plus 3 y right parenthesis equals 3 left parenthesis 21 right parenthesis minus 50 not stretchy rightwards double arrow 3 x plus 3 y minus 2 x minus 3 y equals 63 minus 50
    ∴ x = 13
    Step 3:- find the value of y by substituting value of x
    x plus y equals 21 not stretchy rightwards double arrow 13 plus y equals 21
    y equals 21 minus 13
    ∴ y = 8
    ∴The no.of 2 points and 3-points shots scored by  bulldogs be 13 and 8 respectively.
