Question

While verifying the law of conversation of mass, Ron added 4.5 g of magnesium metal to 15.5 g of hydrochloric acid. If mass of the magnesium chloride formed is 16.9, what is the mass of eliminated hydrogen gas if the law of conservation of mass is valid for this change.
Mg +  2HCl →  MgCl2 +  H2

  1. 3.9 g of Hydrogen gas
  2. 4. 2 g of Hydrogen gas
  3. 3.1 g of Hydrogen gas
  4. 5.5 g of Hydrogen gas

hintHint:

The mass of an atom doesn't change

The correct answer is: 3.1 g of Hydrogen gas

    According to the law of conservation of mass, the mass of reactants is equal to the mass of the product(s) formed.
    Here Mg +  2HCl →  MgCl2 +  H2
    Mg used is 4.5g, HCl used is 15.5g and 16.9g of Magnesium chloride is formed.
    mass of reactants= mass of products
    4.5g + 15.5g = 16.9g + H2
    H2 = 16.9- 20g
    = 3.1g
    Therefore, 3.1g of hydrogen gas is released.
