Question

The Myrtles Plantation charges its customers $10 for booking a room, for every hour they charge $2. If Jordan stays there from 18:00 to 12:00 of the next day, then the amount he must pay is (in $)

  1. $38
  2. $32
  3. $46
  4. $48

hintHint:

An equation has a constant, variable and an equal to sign. It has two sides LHS and RHS. A linear equation in one variable is equation with only one variable and in which the highest degree is 1. Here, we have to find the value of unknown value, by operating both sides with the same number so that the equation will be balanced.

The correct answer is: $46

In the question it is given that,
Booking charge for one room= $10
Charge for 1 hour= $2
Jordan stays for= 18:00 to 12:00= 18 hours
We have to find the amount Jordan will pay the next day.
Step 1: Convert the word problem into numerical equation.
The amount he will pay= Booking charge+ Charge per hourcross timesNumber of hours spent
rightwards double arrowx= $10+ $2cross times18
Step 2: Solve the RHS.
rightwards double arrowx=$10+ $36
rightwards double arrowx=$46
So, Jordan has to pay amount of $46 on next day.
Therefore, the correct option is c,i.e., $46.

A linear equation in one variable is equation with only one variable and in which the highest degree is 1. A linear equation in one variable can be solved by placing the unknown values on one side and known values on another side of the equation. it is important to operate equal terms on both sides so that the equation will remain balanced.
