The foci of the ellipse,25 (x + 1)2 + 9 (y + 2)2 = 225, are at-

  1. (–1, 2) and (–1, –6)

The correct answer is: (–1, 2) and (–1, –6)

    The given equation can be written as :
    (x+1)2/9+(y+2)2/25=1
    Here, a2=9=>a=3 and b2= 25=> b=5
    Hence, we can see that b>a . so, the major axis is along y axis.
    e2=1-a2/b2= 1-9/25=16/25 => e=4/5
    foci : (x+1=0 , y+2= ±be)
    be= 4/5 * 5 = 4
    foci: (x=-1,y = ±4-2) = (-1,2) and (-1,-6)

    the ellipse has its vertex at (-1,-2). The terms x+1 and y+2 can be replaced with X and Y for better understanding so that it gets converted into the standard form.
