Question

Solve the system of equations by elimination :
2X + 3Y = 1
- 2X + 2Y = - 6

hintHint:

Perform any arithmetic operation and then find.

The correct answer is: We can also solve these system of equations by making the coefficients of y to be the same in both the equations.

    Complete step by step solution:
    Let 2x + 3y = 1…(i)
    and - 2x + 2y = - 6…(ii)
    On adding (i) and (ii),
    we get LHS to be 2x + 3y - 2x + 2y = 5y
    and RHS to be 1 - 6 = - 5
On equating LHS and RHS, we get 5y = - 5
    ⇒ y = - 1
    On substituting the value of  in (i), we get 2x + 3× - 1 = 1
    ⇒ 2x - 3 = 1
    ⇒ 2x = 4
    ⇒x = 2
    Hence we get  and
Note: We can also solve these system of equations by making the coefficients of y
to be the same in both the equations.
