Question

The dimensions of a basketball court are 74 feet and 42 feet. What is the length of the diagonal of the court?

hintHint:

Pythagoras' theorem states that “In a right-angled triangle,  the square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of squares of the other two sides“. The sides of this triangle have been named Perpendicular, Base and Hypotenuse. Here, the hypotenuse is the longest side, as it is opposite to the angle 90°.
If a is the perpendicular, b is the base, and c is the hypotenuse, then according to the definition, the Pythagoras Theorem formula is given as
c2= a2 + b2

The correct answer is: the length of the diagonal of the court is 85.1 ft

    Here, Length of perpendicular(a) = 42 ft
    Length of base(b) = 74 ft
    Let’s say that the diagonal length is d and here that length is the hypotenuse of the right-angled triangle.
    Using Pythagoras theorem

    d2 = a2 + b2

    d2 = 422 + 742

    d2 = 7240

    d almost equal to 85.1 ft
    Final Answer:
    Hence, the length of the diagonal of the court is 85.1 ft.

    Does the scatter plot show a linear or non linear association ?

    Using scatter plots to distinguish between linear and nonlinear relationships
    Step 1: Examine the scatter plot. What happens when you move to the right in general? Do the points increase in general? Get Lower? Is there no overarching pattern?
    Step 2: Interpret your observations. Looking from left to right,
    • If the points tend to rise in general, following a reasonably straight line, then the relationship is linear.
    • The points tend to get lower generally, following a relatively straight path, which is a linear relationship.
    • If the points tend to rise in general, but the path is very curved, the relationship is nonlinear.
    • The points tend to get lower in general, but if the path is very curved, it is a nonlinear relationship.
    • If the points do not consistently move up or down, the relationship is nonlinear.
