Question

The graph above shows the distance traveled d, in feet, by a product on a conveyor belt m minutes after the product is placed on the belt. Which of the following equations correctly relates d and m?

  1. d = 2m
  2. d=1 half m
  3. d = m + 2
  4. d = 2m + 2

hintHint:

We find out, through which points, the line goes in the given graph. Then we compare it with the given equations in the options and identify the correct equation.

The correct answers are: d=1 half m, d = 2m + 2

    Step 1 of 3:
Observe that the line is going through the marked points, whose coordinates are (1,2), (2,4) and (3,6).
    Step 2 of 3:
We can see that the y- coordinate of the observed points is twice the x- coordinate of the respective              points.
    Hence, the relationship between x- and y-coordinates is y = 2x.
    Step 3 of 3:
In the graph, y- axis is denoted by “Distance traveled (feet)” as d and x-axis is denoted by “Time                    (minutes)” as m.
    ∴d = 2m is the correct relationship.
    Final Answer:
    The equation, correctly relates d and m, is— A) d = 2m.
