Question

Use the given data to answer the questions and construct the scatter plots
Car Speed (in mph) vs. Gas Mileage (in mpg)

a) Which variable should be the independent variable (x-axis) and which should be the dependent variable (y-axis)?
b) Construct the scatter plot.

hintHint:

A scatter plot is used to plot points on the horizontal and a vertical axis in the attempt to show how much one variable is affected by another. The independent variable is the cause and is independent of any other variables. The dependent variable is the effect and depends on the independent variable.
We are asked to find the dependent and independent variable and the scatter plot for the given table.

The correct answer is:

    Step 1 of 2:
Here, the gas mileage depends on the speed of the car. Initially, for a lower speed the mileage is low and increases as the speed increases. At a particular car speed, the gas mileage reaches its maximum and then starts ti decrease as the speed increases.
So, speed is the independent variable and mileage is the dependent variable.
    Step 2 of 2:
The coordinate points corresponding to the values in the table are:
    (20,25),(25,27),(35,28),(40,30),(45,31),(55,32),(65,30),(80,29),(90,25),(100,22)
Hence, the required scatter plot is:

A double mark on an axis is called a kink or a broken axis. It is used to skip a large segment of numbers which do not lie in the range of the data values and to save space.
