Question
If g(x) is a polynomial such that g(x) g(y) = g(x) + g(y) + g(xy) − 2 for all real x and y and g(2) = 5, then is :
- 2
- 3
- 4
- none of these
The correct answer is: 4
Since g(x) g(y) = g(x) + g(y) + g(xy) − 2 x,…(1)
for x = 2, y = 1, we have g(2) g(1) = g(2) + g(1) + g(2) − 2
5 g(1) = 8 + g(1)
4g(1) = 8Þg(1) = 2
Putting in (1), we get
ÞÞ
ÞÞg(x) − 1 = xn
g(x) = xn + 1
Since g(2) = 5 = 22 + 1
g(x) = x2 + 1
