Question
Nutritional Information for 1-Ounce Servings of Seeds and Nuts
The table above shows the calories, grams of fat, and grams of protein in 1 -ounce servings of selected seeds and nuts.
Lionel purchases 1-pound bags of each of the five seeds and nuts shown in the table. of the following, which best approximates the average (arithmetic mean) number of calories per bag? ( 1 pound = 16 ounces)
- 150
- 250
- 1,500
- 2,500
The correct answer is: 2,500
HINT: Find arithmetic mean of 1 pound bags of the 5 seeds using appropriate formula.
Complete step by step solution:
It is given that 1 pound = 16 ounces.
Lionel purchases 1 pound bags of the 5 seeds.
Pecan for 1 pound = 198 × 16 = 3168 calories
Pistachio for 1 pound = 80 × 16 = 1280 calories
Pumpkin for 1 pound = 159 × 16 = 2544 calories
Sunflower for 1 pound = 166 × 16 = 2656 calories
Walnut for 1 pound = 185 × 16 = 2960 calories
We know the formula for arithmetic mean is
Where, A is arithmetic mean, n is number of values and ai is data set values.
On substituting these values, A = (3168 + 1280 + 2544 + 2656 + 2960) = 2521.6
On approximation, we get it to be 2500.
Hence option D is the correct answer.
Note: We can also find the solution by finding the average of the numbers. First, we fill find the calories of each 5
nuts corresponding to 1 pound then we will add those values and divide it by 5 to get the average.
