Question
x - 2 =
Which of the following values of x is a solution to the equation above?
- -1
- 1
- 4
- 6
The correct answer is: 6
HINT: Make it into a quadratic equation and factorise.
Complete step by step solution:
Given equation is x - 2 =
On squaring on both the sides, we get
On simplification, we get LHS to be x2 - 4x + 4 and RHS to be x + 10
On equating LHS and RHS, we get x2 - 4x + 4 = x + 10
On rearranging the above equation, we get x2 - 5x - 6 = 0 which is a quadratic equation.
This equation can be factored as (x - 6)(x + 1)
Thus the values of x are 6 and -1.
Here we take the value of x to be 6, since, when we substitute this value in the given equation the equation gets satisfied.
The value of -1 will also satisfy the equation but we take the positive value of , which is not equal to -3.
Hence option D is the answer.
Note: We can also find the value of x by substituting the options in the given equation and we get the answer to be
6.
