Question
Combined resistance of 2 coils connected in series has potential drop across the ends of the coils as 5V and 10 V, respectively. If the current flowing through each resistor is 0.02 A, the individual and equivalent resistance of the coil, respectively, are
- 250 Ω, 500 Ω, 750Ω
- 25 Ω, 75 Ω, 100 Ω
- 2.5 Ω, 7.5 Ω, 10 Ω
- 62.5 Ω, 7.5 Ω, 70 Ω
Hint:
Ohm's law states that electric current is proportional to voltage and inversely proportional to resistance.
i.e. V=IR
The correct answer is: 250 Ω, 500 Ω, 750Ω
When combined resistance of 2 coils connected in series has potential drop across the ends of the coils as 5V and 10 V, respectively and the current flowing through each resistor is 0.02 A, the individual and equivalent resistance of the coil are 250 Ω, 500 Ω, 750Ω respectively.
- In a circuit with a parallel or series of resistors, the current applied will be equally distributed to all the resistors.
- In a combined series of resistors, when the voltage of current drops varies in each, the resistance in each coil varies accordingly.
- When two coils are connected in series,
Resistance = R= R1 + R2
Potential difference = V = V1 + V2
- Applying Ohm's law,
V1 = IR1
V2 = IR2
- R1 = = = 250 Ω
- R2 = = = 500 Ω
- Thus, R= R1 + R2 = 250+ 500= 750 Ω
Resistance = R= R1 + R2
Potential difference = V = V1 + V2
V1 = IR1
V2 = IR2
