Question

The wheels on Charlie’s bike have a circumference of 1.5 m. When Charlie is riding fastest, the wheels rotate at a speed of five turns per second. a) What is the fastest speed Charlie can ride his bike, in km/h? b) How far would Charlie travel in 5 minutes at his fastest speed?

hintHint:

Hint:
When two quantities of different units are compared and expressed as a ratio, it is known as Rate. For example, a car travels at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour, then it means in one hour it covers 100 kilometres.
The formula of speed is
Speed = fraction numerator D i s t a n c e over denominator T i m e end fraction

The correct answer is: 2.25 km

    a)
The circumference of the wheel of charlie’s bike is 1.5 m.
It is given that, when charlie is riding fastest, the wheels rotate at a speed of five turns per second.
    So, distance travelled in one second = 5 × 1.5 = 7.5 m
    Fastest speed of charlie’s bike = 7.5 m/s = 7.5 cross times 18 over 5 = 27 km/h
    Final Answer:
Hence, the fastest speed of charlie’s bike is 27 km/h.
    b)
Distance travelled by charlie in his fastest speed in 5 minutes = Speed × Time
    = 27 km/h cross times 5 over 60 h
    = 2.25 km
    Final Answer:
Hence, the distance travelled by charlie in 5 minutes at his fastest speed is 2.25 km
