Hint:
1. When we compare 2 fraction, we check which one of the 2 is larger and which one is smaller and accordingly, assign the appropriate inequality sign i.e. greater than > or less than < to the 2 fractions.
2. If the denominators of the 2 fractions are different, we find the LCM of the denominator and multiply the denominators to make them equal to the LCM and then compare the numerators.

SOLUTION-
From the given information, we observe that-
The denominators of both the fractions are different i.e. 4 & 8.
Hence, find the LCM of 4 & 8 i.e. 8.
We make the denominators equal to 8 as-
Fraction 1 = 1/4 = 1*2 / 4*2 = 2/8 ............................................. (Multiplying numerator and denominator by 2)
Fraction 2 = 3/8
Now, the denominators are same, we compare the numerators as-
2 < 3
∴ 2/8 < 3/8
∴ 1/4 < 3/8
FINAL ANSWER-
Option 'a' i.e. '<' is the correct answer to the given question.
