Question

If 4x+ bx + 9 = 0, where b is a constant, has exactly one solution, what is a possible value of b?

  1. 72
  2. 36
  3. 12
  4. 6

The correct answer is: 12

    Step by step explanation:
    Given:
    Equation: 4x+ bx + 9 = 0
    Step 1:
Compare given equation with general equation.
    ax2 + bx + c = 0
    By comparing we will get
    ⇒ a = 4, b = b and c = 9
    Step 2:
    Find the discriminant i. e D.
    D = b2 - 4ac
    ⇒ D = b2 - 4 (4) (9)
    ⇒ D = b2 - 144
    Step 3:
    Use condition for equal roots
We know that for D = 0, equation has equal and real roots
    ∴ D = 0
    ⇒ b2 - 144 = 0
    ⇒ b2 = 144
not stretchy rightwards double arrow straight b equals square root of 144
not stretchy rightwards double arrow straight b equals plus-or-minus 12
    ∴ b = plus-or-minus 12
Hence, the value of b will be 12 as - 12 is not in the option.
