Question

Juliet rented a car for one day from a company that charges $80 per day plus $0.15 per mile driven. If she was charged a total of $98 for the rental and mileage, for how many miles of driving was Juliet charged? (Assume there is no tax.)

  1. 15
  2. 120
  3. 533
  4. 633

The correct answer is: 120

    Hint:
The concept used in this question is of representing a situation in the form of an equation.
In equation, LHS = RHS, always
In this question, equation with one variable is used, which contain only one variable
Take constant value as it is the question and,
Represent variable value as x or any alphabet.
    Step by step explanation:
    Given:
Rent of car for one day = $80
Rent for per mile = $0.15
    Total rent = $98
    Step 1
Let the mile travelled by juliet bex miles
    So, according to given information,
    The rent for x miles will be 0.15 × x =   $0.15x
Now, the total rent will be,
⇒ Rent for one day + rent for x miles
    ⇒ $80 + $0.15x
    ⇒ 80 + 0.15x
    Step 2.
As, it is given that total rent is $98
    ∴ 80 + 0.15x = 98
    ⇒ 0.15x = 98 - 80
    ⇒ 0.15x = 18
    ⇒ x = fraction numerator 18 over denominator 0.15 end fraction
    ⇒ x = 120
Hence, the juliet was charged 120 miles of driving
