Question

Meena, Neena and Raveena can knit a shawl in 6, 4 and 8 hours respectively. What portion of the shawl will they knit in 1 hour if they work together?

  1. fraction numerator 24 over denominator 11 end fraction text  part end text
  2. fraction numerator 24 over denominator 17 end fraction text  part end text
  3. fraction numerator 24 over denominator 7 end fraction text  part end text
  4. fraction numerator 13 over denominator 24 end fraction text  part end text

hintHint:

The question is about work and time. Meena, Neena and Raveena takes 6 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours respectively to knit a shawl. We have to find the portion of shawl they knit in 1 hour if they work together. We will find the portion of shawl knitted by them in 1 hour. Using this information, we will find the value.

The correct answer is: fraction numerator 13 over denominator 24 end fraction text  part end text

    Meena take 6 hours to knit the shawl.
    Portion of shawl knitted by her in 1 hour is
    M = 1 over 6
    Neena take 4 hours to knit the shawl.
    Portion of shawl knitted by her in 1 hour is
    N = 1 fourth
    Raveena take 8 hours to knit the shawl.
    Portion of shawl knitted by her in 1 hour is
    R = 1 over 8
    To get the portion of shawl knitted by them in 1 hour, we will have to add their individual portion knitted in 1 hour.
    So,
    M + N + R = 1 over 6 plus 1 fourth plus 1 over 8
    L.C.M is 24
    fraction numerator 4 space plus space 6 space plus 3 space over denominator 24 end fraction
    =13 over 24
    So, portion of shawl knitted by them together in 1 hour is 13 over 24 parts.

    L.C.M is the smallest common multiple of the given numbers.
