Question

In △ ABC,  AB = x and BC = x + 1 . How many possible values are there for x if the perimeter of △ ABC is 14?

hintHint:

Find the value of x using the sum of all sides equal to perimeter .
Here we get 2 cases if AB =AC (x side is repeated twice) and IF BC = AC(x + 1 side is repeated twice).

The correct answer is: x = 4 unit (or) x= 13/3 unit are two possible values of x.

    ANS :-  x = 4 unit (or) x= 13 over 3 unit are two possible values of x.
    Explanation :-
Step 1:- Find x if AB = AC (x side is repeated twice)
    We get perimeter = x + x + x + 1
    Given perimeter = 14 units
We get 3 x plus 2 equals 14 text  units  end text not stretchy rightwards double arrow 3 x equals 12 text  units  end text
    ∴ x = 13 over 3  unit
Step 2:- Find x if BC = AC(x +1 side is repeated twice).
    We get perimeter = x + 1 + x + 1 + x
    Given perimeter = 14 units
We get 3 x plus 2 equals 14 text  units  end text not stretchy rightwards double arrow 3 x equals 12 text  units  end text
    ∴ x = 4  unit

A poster has an area of 432 square inches. The length , in inches, of the poster is 6 inches longer than the width of the poster. Which of the following equations can be solved to determine the length, in inches, of the poster?

    Note:
The question can be further extended and ask us to find the length, breadth, or the perimeter of the poster. In that case, first we would solve the above equation to find the length of the poster and then use it to find the breadth. Finally we can find the perimeter easily by using the formula: perimeter equals 2 to the power of cross times(length + breadth).
