Question
The first and the last bird are sitting 40 cm apart. Find the distance between the third and the fourth bird using the segment addition postulate.
Hint:
Add the distance between birds to get distance
The correct answer is: 4 cm.
Step-by-step explanation:
- Given:
Distance between 1st bird and 2nd bird = 15 cm.
Distance between 2nd bird and 3rd bird = 17 cm.
Distance between 4th bird and last bird = 12 cm.
Distance between 1st bird and last bird = 40 cm.
- Step 1:
- Let the distance between 3rd and 4th bird be X cm.
As we know, the three bird are between 1st and last bird.
So,
Distance between 1st and last bird =
Distance between 1st bird and 2nd bird + Distance between 2nd bird and 3rd bird + Distance between 3rd bird and 4th bird + Distance between 4th bird and last bird
∴ Distance between 1st and last bird = 15 + 17 + X + 12
40 = 15 + 17 + X + 12
40 = 44 + X
X = 44 – 40
X = 4 cm
Hence, Distance between 3rd and 4th bird is 4 cm.
- Given:
- Step 1:
- Let the distance between 3rd and 4th bird be X cm.
Hence, Distance between 3rd and 4th bird is 4 cm.
